By the time spring semester hits its midpoint, everything starts to blur together – classes, assignments, group projects, repeat. If you’re feeling stuck on autopilot (or just straight-up exhausted), you’re not alone. With fewer built-in breaks than fall, burnout can sneak up fast.
The good news? You don’t need a full reset to feel better. Sometimes, all it takes is stepping outside.
Longer days, warmer weather, and Tucson in full bloom make spring the perfect excuse to hit pause, get some fresh air, and shake up your routine.
You don’t need to go far – a quick walk across the U of A mall, a sunset picnic, or even an hour-long game of spikeball with friends can be the breath of fresh air you didn’t know you needed. Campus Rec also has an outdoor pool, field-based intramural sports, and open rec fields to frolic in. Even a simple tweak like swapping your library chair for a shady spot outside can make your schedule feel a lot lighter.
If you’re aching to venture beyond campus, but worried that you don’t have the Junior Wilderness Explorer skills it takes, Outdoor Rec makes it surprisingly easy. Outdoor Rec offers a catalog of outdoor trips including group hiking trips, skiing excursions, and even overnight camping adventures – all planned out so you can just show up and explore. If you prefer to do your own thing, you can rent equipment, grab a couple friends, and create your own adventure.
Less than an hour from campus, Mount Lemmon feels like a completely different world. Pack up the car and trade desert heat for cool mountain air, scenic overlooks, and pine forests.
Whether you’re planning a group hike or a low-key sunset hang, the drive alone is worth it – winding through six distinct biomes as the landscape transforms around you.
You can even embark on a stargazing adventure with a visit to Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter. The center offers daytime tours and after-hours “SkyNights”, giving you an unforgettable mountain-top experience.
Spring brings change and an opportunity to try new things – embrace it and get to know your college town a little better. Tucson is situated in the beautiful Sonoran Desert, home to incredible desert landscapes that you can only experience here. Just outside of the city, Saguaro National Park (West) offers beautiful hikes along trails like the Loma Verde Loop or the Freeman Homestead Trail – wear sunscreen, bring water, and go explore!
We also recommend Sweetwater Wetlands Park, just 20 minutes away from campus. If you’re big into birds and wildlife, this is highkey the perfect place. Home to more than 300 species, the park welcomes hundreds of guests for guided tours each year.
If the rugged wilderness isn’t your vibe, Tucson still has plenty of other outdoors activities to enjoy in the springtime – like the Turquoise Trail. Beginning in the heart of downtown, the self-guided walking tour follows a painted turquoise line through a roughly 2 ½ mile loop, showcasing local businesses, restaurants, and landmarks. The path gives visitors an easy way to explore the art, architecture, and culture that makes downtown Tucson unique. If you’ve never taken the 15 minute Sun Link streetcar from campus to downtown, this is the perfect way to get to know the city a little bit better!
Tucson is surrounded by incredible landscapes and outdoor experiences just waiting to be explored. As Wildcats at the University of Arizona, we’re lucky to call this unique desert environment home. Whether you have a full day or just an hour between classes, stepping outside and soaking in the beauty of the Sonoran Desert is one of the best ways to recharge and reconnect.
