Being in the classroom is just one part of a college student's life. There are so many other facets to a college career. We are all beginning to come into our own as people in this world, and with that comes a lot of choices on what to do with our spare time.
For Patrick, involvement created an opportunity to not only better himself, but others around him.
For me, involvement has been an important part of my life since I was a young child. Involvement is what keeps me motivated outside of the classroom. Involvement gives me this vibe, this feeling that I'm fighting for something bigger than myself. While I may only be one person, I'm helping others and it makes me feel big, almost larger than life.
Patrick connects his passion for public service with his personal mission to help others.
One of my passions is being in the community volunteering for local campaigns throughout the city of Tucson. I am a strong advocate for public education and the importance that it brings to a community as a service. I’ve advocated for public school funding throughout the state of Arizona and have even had discussions with the County Supervisors about how to bring more of the younger generation to the table of government and help make decisions that are going to impact them and their future.
I am a political junkie for all of the right reasons. What I find most fulfilling about public service is knowing that I've helped someone. That fulfillment comes through being involved in the community that surrounds me.
With added involvement comes greater responsibility, and to maintain a successful balance in and outside of the classroom, Patrick sets goals each day.
With doing things outside of class and filling up that spare time, staying organized I believe is important to a balanced life both in and out of school. You're juggling so many things at one time, just making sure that I put my priorities in a row and make sure that I know what priority number one is two, three, four, five and six so that I can be successful at the end of the day.
Remember the big picture and never, ever forget who you are.
I will leave you with this as you continue your journey. The best piece of advice that I've ever gotten was that the two best days in your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why. Here, at the University of Arizona, I was able to discover my why. I believe I'm here on this planet to make a positive difference and in whatever sector that I found myself in this world. Find your reason why.
